Resolute Take 2

After my first experiment with constructing “equivalent” Clan and Inner Sphere Mechs, I was not entirely satisfied with the results.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I could probably use Endo-Composite Internal Structure over regular Endosteel in order to free up much needed crit space in the Inner Sphere Mech.  Here are the results of continuing to refine the Inner Sphere design.

Just as before, I’ll present the Clan version of the Mech, the Bengal.  What follows the stats for the Bengal are the Resolute RSL-01 and then the new Resolute RSL-02.

There are some key differences between the RSL-01 and RSL-02.  By choosing Endo-Composite over Endosteel, it cost me an extra 1.5 tons but halved the required critical slots for internal structure from 14 to seven.  I made up the extra needed tonnage by switching to an XL Fusion Engine and XL Gyro.  The added crit and tonnage from making those moves also allowed me to add an extra Double Heat Sink and two more Medium Lasers.

This new version has a slightly better alignment to the Clan mech, but still not ideal.  Its short range damage potential is significantly better.  It can fire the Streak SRM 6’s, both Medium Lasers, the Small Laser, and one ER PPC while running and still maintaining neutral heat.  That is a damage potential of 71.  For the same heat, the Clan Mech’s max damage potential with one ER PPC and both Streak SRM 6’s is 63.  Once again, if the Clan Mech practices zellbringen, the Inner Sphere gets the added benefit of physical attacks.  I feel confident that the extra two Medium Lasers more than make up for the lower damage of Inner Sphere ER PPCs, especially since four weapons allow double the possibilities for crits over two weapons.  I took off a hand actuator on the left arm to free up the last crit slot I needed.  I put the Medium Lasers on that arm.  The opposite arm has the hand so the Mech can still prop on the other hand if on the ground.

Cost is still considerably in favor of the Inner Sphere Mech.  At a cost of 2336 for the Clan Mech compared to 1550 for the Resolute RSL-02, there is still a lot of BV buying power compared to the Clan Mech.  You can get 786 worth of another Light Mech or a very tough vehicle.

Now to weaknesses.  The Mech still lacks CASE for the Streak Ammo.  It doesn’t really make sense to add it.  Inner Sphere Mechs can’t use CASE on arms, and if a side torso is destroyed, that’s the loss of three engine slots anyway.  Extra crit spaces for gyro and engine are still a huge weakness.  This Mech needs to depend upon its support and careful placement to avoid taking internal damage.

I’m much more satisfied with the Resolute RSN-02 than the RSN-01.  It isn’t a perfect match and the Inner Sphere Mech definitely has to make some compromises.  But I’m pretty satisfied that the Resolute RSN-02’s shortcomings are more than made up for by the reduced cost of the Mech.

    There is no added benefit to physical attacks. This isn’t a pugilistic street fight, these are expensive machines, with highly trained pilots which should be treated as a worthy opponent. Mercenaries with out any honor.
