Rotring 600 Mechanical Pencil Video Review

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWt-zFP9kzQ

The Rotring 600 sets the standard for what a drafting pencil should be.  In the video I do a breakdown of the pencil components, the features, and I compare it to the Alvin Draft/Matic.

Pros:  Impeccable construction and quality, solid grip with near-perfect knurling, lead hardness indicator, solid pocket clip, replaceable tip

Cons: eraser, some internals plastic

Writing Experience: Great

Quality: Superb (slight hit on some plastic internals, but it’s like finding a small hidden scratch on a Bentley)

Features: OK+ (replaceable tip and lead hardness indicator get it the bump)

Price: Moderate-Expensive (as low as 21 on Amazon, 33 USD Jetpens, Retail 50 USD)

Be cautious that you get the exact generation you want and that you haven’t ordered a knock off.  I would trust only established pen/pencil sites and the actual Rotring listing on Amazon.

Top Ten?  You bet.  Number 2.  Despite the lower rating on Features, I find it hard to rate this pencil below a TWSBI Precision, as much as I like the TWSBI, even with a retractable tip.  It has been the industry standard for a drafting pencil for decades.

The Top Ten:

1) Rotring Rapid Pro

Blick Art stores in the MidWest carry the line in stores and online. I wouldn’t call them common in use except by specialists or mechanical pencil aficionados. They are certainly only marketed to drafters.

Nice review! I saw the silver 0.7 Rotring 600 on Amazon for only 13 dollars and it was too good of a deal to not buy. It arrived the other day and it has become one of my favorite pencils. The only complaint would be that the silver finish scratches extremely easily. My black 600 is more durable because it has a rough finish as opposed to the smooth, matte finish of the silver one.

LOL, actually, I just happened to be browsing Amazon and saw it. Now, it’s back to regular price. It stayed at 13 dollars for only 2 days. Several days later, the same seller, Juniper’s, also had the Rotring Rapid Pro for 20 dollar. After receiving the item, my guess is that the seller is clearing out its old packaging. Mine came in a rectangular box instead of the triangular box the new 600s come in. The pencil itself however, has the words “Rotring 600” in it so it must not be too old.
