The Rotring 800 packs all of the legendary writing mystique of the 600 with some benefits and some drawbacks.
Pros: Rotring quality, stellar grip and weight, classy look
Cons: squishy mechanism, high price for that con
Writing Experience: Great (same as the 600)
Features: Great (retractable mechanism on the best quality pencil available)
Quality: Great (gets a dock from the Superb of the 600 due to the spongy advancement mechanism on such an expensive pencil)
Price: Luxury (75 USD Retail, 52 USD JetPens, often more elsewhere!)
The Rotring 800 in 0.7 mm does not show any evidence of the lead breakage issue that some others have claimed it suffers from. The lead advancement mechanism is squishy, especially for the implied promises of this price point. It is the most disappointing part of a great experience. But we have to have perspective on the total package. It’s like ordering the finest Kobe beef in Hong Kong, ordering it Medium, and getting it Medium Well. You’re still going to eat it, and you will enjoy it. Collectors who look for and use added functionality should check it out. But the 600 is still the quintessential mechanical pencil, in my mind. You just need to live with it not being pocket safe. Despite the 800’s flaws, it is still better than the Rapid Pro and TWSBI Precision, and that is high praise amongst great company.
